Scholarships for Doctoral Programme

Various types of scholarships are available for the Doctoral Programmes at TERI SAS.

1. TERI SAS Funded Scholarships

These are competitive scholarships funded by TERI SAS to pursue Ph.D. in the following areas: These are awarded only to those with exceptional research proposals.

  • Climate Change
  • Biotechnology
  • Sustainable Transport Systems
  • Energy and Environment
  • Natural Resource Management
  • Policy Studies and Governance
  • Sustainable Development
  • Sustainable Businesses/Green Management

 

Students are invited to submit a research proposal related to the above mentioned themes after having discussion with their prospective supervisors. The list of the faculty and their research areas is available on the website.

A maximum of two successful proposals will get scholarship as per the laid down criteria, given below:

The scholarship disbursement is attached with different milestones and will spread over a period of five years from date of registration. These milestones and the linked payments are as follows:

  1. Every month of the Ph.D. programme, and upto a maximum of 5 years - Rs 12,000/-
  2. On successful completion of comprehensive examination - Rs 75,000/-
  3. On final acceptance of first research paper
    1. In an International peer reviewed journal - Rs 1,00,000/-
    2. In a National peer reviewed journal - Rs 40,000/-
  4. On final acceptance of second research paper
    1. In an International peer reviewed journal - Rs 1,00,000/-
    2. In a National peer reviewed journal - Rs 40,000/-
  5. On successful Synopsis presentation/examination - Rs, 1,25,000/-
  6. On successful defence of Ph.D. - Rs 1,30,000/-

2. TERI Project-specific Scholarships (Fully Funded)

These are project-specific opportunities which are advertised from time to time. A student will get hands on experience to work on the funded projects at TERI/TERI SAS in a multidisciplinary environment.

The student will be entitled for a stipend as per TERI SAS rules (Rs. 25000 + 30% HRA i.e. a total of Rs.32,500). The scholarship will be available for the entire duration of the project to be renewed every year subject to a minimum performance as rated by the student research committee.

Please note that these scholarships will be limited to the specific TERI/TERI SAS projects and so will start at the commencement of the project and end at the termination of the project.

3. Extramurally funded/Corporate Scholarships

These scholarships are funded by an external agency (corporate/Foundation/NGOs/PSU) to pursue the research in a specific area of interest. A student will be required to submit a research proposal in a specific format related to the specified theme. The scholarship provides a unique opportunity to research on contemporary themes in collaboration with external agencies.

The scholarship will be available for a period (normally five years) specified by the funding agency subject to a minimum performance as rated by the student research committee.

Currently no Scholarship are available under this head.

Other Ph.D. opportunities

These are opportunities which are either self-funded or are for students who have already cleared the CSIR/ NET exam and are entitled for scholarships under this scheme. A student may opt for a part-time Ph.D. under self-finance scheme.

  • Option 1:
  • A student can pursue Ph.D. in the area of their choice under the supervision by TERI SAS faculty. The student is advised to submit a research proposal after having discussion with their prospective supervisors. The list of the faculty and their research areas is available on the website.
  • Option 2:
  • Opportunities are also available with respective faculty at the Deemed University in specific areas of their interest. The student is expected to discuss the project with the prospective supervisor and is required to submit a research proposal for the same.
Please note that all Ph.D. candidates including part-time need to do mandatory pre-Ph.D. course work, which would normally take one year to complete. Physical attendance is mandatory during this phase.

 

Note:

The scholarships do not include tuition fee which has to be borne by the student.

During their tenure at the Deemed University, students will get an opportunity for teaching assistantship in the related courses.

How to Apply

The applicant is required to submit an application (in the format given), latest CV and two references. An application for scholarship can be submitted at the time of application of Ph.D. admissions (i.e., throughout the year). But selection committee screens the applications only two times in a year i.e., June and December. Ph.D. Application form
