The MSc. programme in Economics at the TERI University is a two year programme for students who want to specialize in Environment and Resource Economics. This sub-discipline attempts to understand, analyse, and evaluate the exchanges between nature and human society. It aims to design and implement policy instruments that assist in sustaining and enhancing quality of life on earth.
The core strength of the programme lies in its innovative curriculum, which integrates the strengths of economic theory with the rigour of economic analysis. The syllabus for the programme is frequently revised by bringing in recent case studies and examples from policy making domains. The quality of the curriculum is regularly evaluated by external academicians at different levels.
This curriculum fosters an understanding of, among other topics:
- Strengths and limitations of economic instruments for effective policy-making on matters related to ecology and environment.
- Approaches for evaluating costs of resource use
- Ways to utilize natural resources efficiently and prevention of degradation.
As a specialized programme, it equips its candidates to pursue a career in the private or the public sector, or to continue their research in the form of higher academic degrees in India or overseas.
The core elements of the programme not only includes advanced graduate level exposure to microeconomics, macroeconomics, mathematics, statistics, and econometrics, but our students also receive an in-depth knowledge of the concepts, theories, techniques, policies and other applications in ecological, environmental, and natural resource economics. This domain knowledge makes the programme an MSc. (Economics)-Plus.
Besides offering the students a wide choice of specialized optional papers, the unique feature of this programme is the Master’s Thesis component, which provides students with hands-on opportunity to demonstrate their ability as research professionals. In this component, students can apply their knowledge for the analysis, appraisal, and evaluation of a wide range of environmental problems and policies. Each student is supervised by one or more faculty members and every thesis is reviewed extensively by a panel of experts to ensure quality, originality, and rigor. The quality of the dissertations has been appreciated in various forums including national and international conferences.
WHY STUDY Environment and Resource Economics ?
Climate change and sustainable use of energy resources for future have been globally recognized among the most serious concerns facing mankind today. Economics as a discipline has responded to these challenges by incorporating these issues in standard theory and analysis. In various national and international forums where such issues are discussed, the opinions of economists are much sought after; in other decision-making or policymaking bodies, economists trained in environment and resource economics are expected to contribute by offering specialized insights.
A Master’s programme in Environmental and Resource Economics examines the application of economic theory to ecological, environmental, and natural resource issues within an interdisciplinary setting. It targets students who wish to become professional environment and resource economists in academia, public and private institutions, international organizations, and those who want to pursue a career in research and consultancy in these areas.
WHY STUDY AT TERI U ?
TERI, from its inception, has been a forerunner in interdisciplinary research in environment, energy and resources. The M.Sc. programme in TU draws philosophical inspiration from the long history, involvement and expertise of TERI in these fields.
The syllabus of the M.Sc. programme at TU is designed to provide students with a balanced exposure to both theoretical and analytical thinking for research and practical applications, with a special focus on environmental problems, policies, and institutions. This programme equips students with quantitative techniques, such as statistics, econometrics, time series, and environmental valuation. In addition, students are well-trained in using statistical and econometric software, such as R, STATA, SPSS, and JMulTi. Furthermore, the master’s dissertation being a mandatory graduation requirement, the students can demonstrate their learning by its application to a relevant problem.
Where will the Degree Take You?
The students are encouraged to undergo a summer internship at the end of the second semester, which trains them to translate theoretical knowledge into applied research as conducted at think-tanks and industries. Desirous students are also provided with placement assistance. Our former students have obtained placements in the government, corporations, think-tanks, international organizations, civil society organizations, and research institutes of repute. Some students have also opted for higher studies in academic institutions like Centre for Development Studies, Delhi School of Economics, Jawaharlal Nehru University, John Hopkins University, University of California, Riverside, University of Warwick, Vanderbilt University, and Yale University, among others.
