As an IFS officer of the Uttar Pradesh cadre, Dr. J. V. Sharma has an intimate knowledge of biodiversity, forestry, policy and natural resource issues in Uttar Pradesh, and has spent several years in the Terai Arc Landscape and elsewhere across the State.
He has hands on experience of forest management of temperate, sub-temperate zone in the hills of Uttar Pradesh now Uttarakhand, and tropical forests in terai area of Uttar Pradesh. He has experience in the reclamation of abandoned limestone mines in Doon valley, in the afforestation of the alkaline areas of central UP, rehabilitation of abandoned iron ore mine dumps and aluminum industrial waste dumps and also the rehabilitation of iron ore dumps.
In his capacity as an IFS officer, he has enforced various laws viz. Indian Forest Act, 1927, Forest Conservation Act, Tree protection Act, UP Private forest Act, UP Saw mill Act and UP Transit Rules etc.
He was the national focal point for the United Nations Forum on Forests, Asia Pacific Forestry Commission, FAO and the Asia Pacific Forestry Outlook Study. He has written the forestry scenario of India in 2020. He was a nodal officer in the Ministry of Environment & Forests for the Biofuel Mission and Schedule Tribe and other Traditional Forest Dwellers (Recognition of Forest Rights) Act, 2006.
