M.Tech (Urban Development and Management)
The rapidity and magnitude of urbanization with its multifarious ramifications on the settlement systems across the world, and particularly in India, necessitates trained and skilled manpower in the dynamic urban sector. The two year M.Tech. Urban Development and Management (UDM) programme was launched in July 2013 to build a pool of competent professionals having required technical skills, managerial capabilities, and understanding of socio-economic, environmental, and legal issues, capable of analyzing and addressing the challenges and opportunities in urban development, planning and management of cities.
The programme has an inclusive approach to urban development and management issues as the students are trained to work across disciplinary domains of science, technology, policy, governance and social sciences, and within the overarching theme of sustainable habitat and development. The programme’s pedagogy involving a variety of research based core and elective courses taught in the first two semesters, five months internship with Municipal Corporations in the third semester and five months internship with institutions in the urban development sector in the fourth semester empowers the students with knowledge as well as hands-on experience of management of cities.
The third semester students intern with Municipal Corporations and Parastatals in Delhi NCR, viz. North Delhi, South Delhi, East Delhi, Faridabad, Gurgaon, Delhi Jal Board and Delhi Development Authority. Through this engagement, the students have expectedly enhanced their capacities and career opportunities by acquiring a heightened sense of awareness and understanding about multiple challenges faced in the delivery of services and implementation of various schemes by the Municipal Corporations. Their knowledge base and analytical skills is further enhanced and honed through working on projects undertaken by the Municipal Corporations.
