M.A. (SDP) Programme

TERI University is one of the twenty-two pioneering academic institutions worldwide, funded by the McArthur Foundation to offer the unique Masters programme on Sustainable Development Practice based on the recommendations made by the International Commission on Education for Sustainable Development Practice in 2007-08. This Masters level training programme is inherently designed to meet the long-standing needs that existed in development training programmes internationally for comprehensive cross-disciplinary learning, critical for development practitioners aiming to meet sustainable development goals. With emphasis on developing understanding beyond cultural boundaries and across sectoral divisions, the M.A. (SDP) programme is rooted in four main disciplines: Health Sciences, Natural Sciences & Engineering, Social Sciences, and Management. The students develop proficiencies and knowledge to work in national and international NGOs, bilateral and multinational financial institutions and aid organizations, grant-giving foundations and corporations, private sector companies, and various government ministries.

Programme highlights: Field training

A distinguishing element of TERI University's MA (SDP) course curriculum bears the greater practical element spread across the four semesters. The practical components are sufficiently integrated to complete a cycle of learning, beginning from problem identification, needs assessment at a community level, to policy formulation and analysis at a strategic level. The aim of the training component is to introduce students to the complex challenges of sustainable development and subsequently provide them with opportunities to apply their knowledge, skills, and competencies to effectively deal with these challenges.

Field training objectives

The field training aims to provide students with a structured and guided immersion into a development experience. Working closely with skilled practitioners, community members, and faculty mentors, students are involved in field training with competencies that may be categorized into the following general areas:

  • Technical Skills
  • Social and Cultural Skills
  • Cross-Sectoral Understanding
  • Communication, Community Participation & Facilitation skills
